For us, though, there’s an even better illustration of Donald Trump’s comfort with DIY justice. We like this example precisely because Trump stood to gain nothing from recommending—nay coaxing—others to disregard the law. In June 2017, some tribal leaders met with the president in the White House. In the course of their discussion with Trump, they identied federal regulatory barriers that restricted what the tribes could do with their land. Trump encouraged them to do what he’d surely do in that situation: “Just do it,” he urged. That is, they should just defy federal law and extract whatever they wanted from the land. When the chiefs, no doubt surprised by the president’s advice, pushed back, Trump doubled down with the assurance that his administration was playing by a new set of rules: “Now it’s me. The government’s different now. Obama’s gone; and we’re doing things differently here.” Picking up on one tribal leader’s lingering skepticism, Trump persisted: “Chief, chief, what are they going to do? Once you get it out of the ground are they going to make you put it back in there? I mean, once it’s out of the ground it can’t go back in there. You’ve just got to do it. I’m telling you, chief, you’ve just got to do it.
